As part of our work to celebrate Mental Health Awareness week 2018, we were delighted to have Deep:Black come and deliver a workshop to our parents and carers on how we can support both ourselves and others in managing stress and anxiety. This is the second year we have held the workshop for our parents and carers with Deep:Black and each time we feel that we gain a great deal through the experience. Deep:Black helps us in our work to develop our skills further, to support each other and come together to look after our mental health and emotional well-being.

The Canon Frome Court reflection day is an important event on the community annual calendar. Petra facilitated a focused, diverse and relevant programme which engaged all of the attendees ensuing maximum participation. She educated the community in on-confrontational ways of approaching controversial issues which will help maintain the harmony of the community. Petra is hugely knowledgable in he  field, widely expended and very engaging and I look forward to welcoming her back to facilitate future events.

One particularly sweet project is Birds Crossing Borders, which allows people to colour in and send postcards to unknown recipients, posted between the jungle and the UK. It has no grand goal, just to increase sympathy and understanding… it’s not providing solutions. It encourages us to think carefully and ask questions.

Park View School, Haringey, London – Head of Year 10

Park View has been working with Deep Black for nearly three years now, and I can confidently say they’ve been instrumental in improving the performance of our students. Their work with our targeted cohort, particularly vulnerable students with varied needs—ranging from attendance and punctuality to SEN, Pupil Premium, young carers, and academic support—has made a significant difference. Deep Black delivers two core programmes for us: a photography workshop for both boys and girls, and a Motivation and Resilience programme. These weekly sessions have provided our students with a powerful platform to explore self-development and embrace a positive growth mindset. The impact has been profound, and we fully intend to continue our collaboration. Our key focus areas include building friendships, improving attendance, increasing confidence, reducing exclusions, and addressing poor punctuality. I carefully select students from our targeted group, and they are closely monitored throughout their involvement. With Deep Black’s support, we’ve seen remarkable progress. The students become more accountable and take greater responsibility for both their education and their lives. They also gain an understanding of valuable transferrable skills that will serve them well in higher education and beyond. Deep Black is, in my experience, a truly inspiring organisation—one that is actively reshaping the future for children across our boroughs.
